Coronado is an island-feeling peninsula across the bay from downtown San Diego, with a wide flat white-sand beach on the ocean side, a walkable village along Orange Avenue, and a bayfront strip near the Ferry Landing. Where you stay changes the trip completely: beachfront for the classic Coronado weekend, the Village for walkability and lower rates, the bayfront for skyline views and easy downtown access, and the Cays for a quiet resort stay with a car.
Getting there: You do not need a car on Coronado. The passenger ferry from Broadway Pier runs about every 30–60 minutes for $8 each way (bikes free), and the 904 bus loops the island for $2.50. Driving over the Coronado Bridge is free, but hotel parking runs $35–$55 a night.
