Los Angeles is about 120 miles north of San Diego. Driving takes two hours in perfect conditions and three to four in real ones, plus $20 to $40 a day in LA parking. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner covers downtown San Diego to LA Union Station in around two hours and forty minutes, arrives in the middle of the Metro network, and lets you sleep on the way home — for most one-day trips it's the better option. A car-free day works well if you pick one district: Union Station puts you a short ride from downtown, Koreatown, Hollywood and Exposition Park's museums, while the beach cities are a longer haul. If you want Malibu, the Getty or multiple neighborhoods, drive or stay the night.

Union Station connects directly to Metro lines reaching Hollywood, Koreatown, downtown, Exposition Park and Santa Monica. Add the coastal views between Del Mar and San Clemente and it's the more pleasant journey by a wide margin.
