Score 86/100 · Order: Sage fried chicken and waffles · $20–30

Hash House built its name on tower-sized plates, but the farm-style cooking is solid and the fried chicken and waffles is a legitimately good dish. Go hungry.

Local tip: One order feeds two people — split it and add a side of bacon.

Score 84/100 · Order: Sage fried chicken and waffles or hashed browns · $18–30

Hash House a Go Go is famous for portions that are comically large, but the food is better than the tourist-trap reputation suggests. The sage fried chicken and waffles is the must-order: crispy fried chicken over a sage waffle, served with maple reduction. The flavors are bold and the execution is solid. The hashed browns are crispy and the Bloody Marys are generous. The Hillcrest location is the original, and the atmosphere is lively. It is the best brunch for anyone who wants to leave very full and very satisfied.
