Marine layer season
Visitors book San Diego in May and June expecting the postcard and get a low gray ceiling that doesn't lift until early afternoon. It's called May Gray and June Gloom, it's completely normal, and it's easy to plan around once you understand it.

May Gray and June Gloom are San Diego's marine layer season, when cool ocean air forms a low cloud deck over the coast in late spring. Mornings are overcast and around 62–66°F, and the clouds usually burn off between 11am and 2pm at the coast — or not at all on the worst days. Go 10–15 miles inland (Balboa Park, Escondido, Julian) and it's often sunny and 10–15 degrees warmer by late morning.

Cool water offshore chills the air just above it, and a layer of warmer air above traps that cool, moist air against the coast. The result is a shallow stratus deck a few hundred to a couple thousand feet thick. Daytime heating usually erodes it from the inland edge outward, which is why the burn-off moves from east to west through the morning.
September and October are the clearest, warmest months of the year, with the warmest ocean temperatures and no marine layer. If you're choosing dates purely for sun, skip late spring and book fall.
June Gloom is the low marine-layer cloud deck that settles over coastal San Diego in late spring. Mornings are overcast and around 62–66°F, and the clouds typically burn off between 11am and 2pm.
It usually fades by early July, though patchy morning cloud can continue into August. September and October are San Diego's clearest months.
Rarely. The marine layer produces mist or light drizzle, not measurable rain. San Diego's actual rainy season is December through March.
Go inland. Balboa Park, Mission Trails, Escondido, the Safari Park and Julian are typically sunny and 10–15°F warmer while the coast stays gray.
