San Diego County is served by four main hospital systems: UC San Diego Health (Hillcrest and La Jolla), Scripps (Mercy, La Jolla, Encinitas, Chula Vista), Sharp (Sharp Memorial, Grossmont, Chula Vista, Coronado), and Palomar Health in North County inland. Rady Children's in Kearny Mesa is the county's only dedicated pediatric hospital and pediatric trauma center. The adult trauma centers are UCSD Hillcrest, Scripps Mercy, Sharp Memorial, Palomar Medical Center Escondido, and Scripps Memorial La Jolla. For anything life-threatening — chest pain, stroke symptoms, major bleeding, difficulty breathing — call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For sprains, minor cuts, fevers, infections, and illness that can't wait for your primary care doctor, urgent care is dramatically cheaper and faster; most neighborhoods have several, and the big systems all run their own branded urgent care clinics that share records with their hospitals. The public district system for inland North County — Palomar Medical Center Escondido and Poway. If you live in Escondido, San Marcos, Poway, or Ramona, this is your closest full-service option.
Kearny Mesa. The only children's hospital in the county and the region's pediatric trauma center, with satellite specialty clinics in Oceanside, Escondido, and Murrieta.
Balboa Park. Serves active duty, dependents, and retirees. Civilians are treated only in emergencies.
Oceanside. Coastal North County's community hospital, serving Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Vista.
This is the single biggest money decision in American healthcare that ordinary people make under stress. The rule of thumb is simple.
Chest pain, stroke symptoms (face drooping, arm weakness, speech trouble), trouble breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, head injury with confusion, severe abdominal pain, or a serious fall. Don't drive yourself for these — call 911.
Fevers, ear infections, UTIs, sprains, minor fractures, stitches, rashes, and illness on a weekend. Most San Diego urgent cares have X-ray on site. Costs are typically a small fraction of an emergency room visit for the same complaint.
