San Diego's flagship disc golf course is at Morley Field in Balboa Park — a tight, mature, eucalyptus-lined layout that has hosted major events and charges a small daily fee, with discs available to rent or buy at the on-site pro shop. Beyond it, most county courses are free public-park layouts, spread from Kearny Mesa and Mira Mesa out to East County and North County. Morley Field is not a beginner's course: the fairways are narrow, the trees are unforgiving and the pace is quick. New players should start on an open park layout, buy a mid-range disc rather than a driver, and go on a weekday morning. Bring water, decent shoes and something to mark your discs — you will lose one.

A classic wooded course threading through mature eucalyptus in the northeast corner of Balboa Park. Tight lines, elevation changes, and a reputation for punishing anyone who tries to overpower it.
Local tip: Throw controlled mid-ranges off the tee. Big drivers find trees here faster than they find fairways.

Longer, hillier and considerably hotter inland. Play early in the day from June through September and carry more water than you think you need.
