San Diego theme parks
Tickets, rides, the ages it's actually best for, and where to stay — everything for a LEGOLAND day in Carlsbad, from locals who've done it with kids in tow.
Last updated

LEGOLAND California is in Carlsbad, about 35 miles north of downtown San Diego. It's the best theme park in the state for kids ages 3–9. Buy dated tickets online ($79–$109 vs $30 more at the gate), arrive at opening, plan one full day, and stay overnight in Carlsbad if you can — commuting back to San Diego with tired kids is the one mistake everyone makes once.
One Legoland Drive, Carlsbad, CA 92008. 35–45 min from downtown San Diego via I-5 North; no practical public transit. Standard day parking is $40 per vehicle as currently listed by LEGOLAND. Check the official resort parking page before your visit.
| Ticket type | Typical price | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1-Day dated ticket (online) | $79–$109 | Cheapest way in. Price varies by date; buy at least a week ahead. |
| 1-Day walk-up gate price | $119–$139 | Avoid — walk-up pricing runs about $30 more per person. |
| Park Hopper (park + Water Park + Sea Life) | +$30–$50 | Only worth it in summer when the Water Park is open. |
| Sea Life Aquarium only | $25–$30 | Small aquarium; fine as an add-on, not a standalone trip. |
| Kids under 3 | Free | No ticket needed for toddlers under 3. |
Authorized resellers occasionally undercut the gate by a few dollars on dated tickets — never buy from resale marketplaces, which are a common scam vector for theme parks. Prices change; confirm on the official LEGOLAND site before you book.
Duplo Playtown, Fairy Tale Brook, Coast Cruise and the carousel are made for this group. Go at opening, leave before nap time — the park is loud and overstimulating for toddlers by early afternoon.
This is who LEGOLAND is designed for. Driving School (two tracks: 3–5 and 6–12), LEGO NINJAGO The Ride, Lost Kingdom Adventure and Coastersaurus all land perfectly. A 6- or 7-year-old will call this the best day of the trip.
The Dragon coaster, LEGO Movie 4D and the build stations still work, but thrill-seekers will be ready for SeaWorld's bigger rides. Pair it with the beach or Carlsbad village rather than two park days.
Miniland USA is genuinely impressive for adults, but the rides are tame. Without a kid in tow, spend the day in Carlsbad or at Torrey Pines instead.

Miniature LEGO cities — the park's highlight for adults too. Don't rush it.
Kids drive real electric cars and earn a license. The single most-loved ride for ages 6–12.
Interactive dark ride using hand-motion sensors. Go early; lines build by 11 AM.
The biggest coaster — a mild thrill that works for most elementary-age kids.
Laser-target dark ride, short waits, good midday break from the sun.
Relaxing boat ride past LEGO landmarks — a good first ride for little ones.
Water play area. Bring a change of clothes or swimsuits in summer.
The toddler zone — gentle, shaded in parts, and the reason under-5s love this park.

Staying in Carlsbad beats driving back to San Diego with exhausted kids. These are the picks, closest first.
Themed rooms, early park entry, and a 2-minute walk to the gate. Expensive but the easiest trip with young kids.
The newer on-site option — knights-and-princesses theming, same early-entry perk, slightly bigger rooms.
Family favorite 5 minutes away — spacious suites, free breakfast, and much lower rates than the on-site hotels.
Across from the beach, about 10 minutes from the park — the pick if you're mixing park day with coast time.
Village location walkable to restaurants and the beach; good for families who want more than the park.

Driving: I-5 North to the Cannon Road exit in Carlsbad, then follow signs — about 35–45 minutes from downtown San Diego, up to 75 in Friday-afternoon traffic. Leave San Diego by 8:30 AM to make rope drop.
Parking: LEGOLAND currently lists general parking at $40 per automobile and preferred parking from $45. Hotel self-parking is separately charged at $40 per night/day unless your rate or qualifying pass includes it. Confirm official parking rules and prices before traveling.
Hours: Typically 10 AM–5/6 PM off-season, later in summer and on weekends. The park closes some Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the off-season — always check the calendar for your date.
What to bring: Sealed water bottles, sunscreen (the park is exposed), swimsuits if you're doing Pirate Shores or the Water Park, and LEGO minifigures for trading with staff.
Dated 1-day tickets bought online run about $79–$109 depending on the date. Walk-up gate prices are $30 or more higher, so always buy in advance. Kids under 3 are free.
Ages 3 to 9, with 5–8 the absolute sweet spot. Toddlers have a dedicated Duplo zone, while kids older than 10 often find the rides too tame and prefer SeaWorld.
One full day covers the main park for most families. Add a second day only if you're doing the Water Park in summer or staying on-site and want a relaxed pace.
LEGOLAND is in Carlsbad, about 35 miles north of downtown San Diego — roughly 35–45 minutes by car on I-5. There's no practical public transit option; drive or stay overnight in Carlsbad.
For kids under 9, LEGOLAND wins — the rides, play areas and scale are designed for them. For tweens, teens and animal lovers, SeaWorld is the better pick. Our full comparison breaks it down by age and budget.
You can bring sealed water and small snacks. There's a picnic area just outside the entrance for full meals — a popular money-saving move since in-park food is pricey.
