The best free dates in San Diego are outdoor and timed to the light or the tide. Sunset Cliffs at golden hour, the Cabrillo tide pools at low tide, the Torrey Pines beach trail, and the Spreckels Organ Pavilion's free Sunday 2pm concert in Balboa Park cost nothing and take a full afternoon or evening. Add the Saturday Little Italy Mercato, a beach fire pit in Ocean Beach or Mission Bay (free, first-come), Balboa Park's free resident museum Tuesdays, and the Coronado bayside walk. Budget only for parking — free at OB, PB, and most North County lots, metered downtown and in La Jolla.

San Diego's cheapest date asset is the sunset. Show up 30 minutes early and it's a whole evening.
Point Loma · Free parking on Ladera St · arrive 30 min early
The default free San Diego date, and it earns it. Park on Ladera Street, walk south along the bluff, and find a ledge. Bring a jacket — the wind off the water drops the temperature 10 degrees at sundown. Go on a weeknight and it's noticeably quieter than a Saturday.
La Jolla · Free · 360-degree view
The panoramic option: downtown skyline on one side, ocean on the other. Better than the cliffs on a hazy day because the view is inland as well as out. Small lot, so arrive before the last 20 minutes of light.
Pacific Beach · Free · grass and skyline
The locals' picnic-and-sunset hill. Grass to sit on, bay and skyline in the frame, and easy street parking a block up. Best of the three if you're bringing food and want to stay after dark.
Check a tide table first — this only works at low tide, which is a morning event most of the year.
Point Loma · Low tide · park entry fee
The best tide pooling in the county: anemones, hermit crabs, and the occasional octopus in the lower pools. The pools themselves are free, though Cabrillo charges vehicle entry. Wear shoes with grip; the rocks are slick and the fine for touching wildlife is real.
La Jolla · Free to walk · metered parking
Sea lions, snorkelers, and a coastal walk that takes as long as you want it to. Free from the street; the paid cave stairs are optional. Parking is the real cost here — meters or a walk from further up Prospect.
Encinitas · Free lots · surf watching
The North County version: walk down the stairs at Swami's, watch the lineup, then wander into Encinitas for window shopping. Free parking at both, which is rare on this coast.

Balboa Park · Sundays 2pm · free · year-round
A free, hour-long concert on the world's largest outdoor pipe organ, every Sunday afternoon. Bring a blanket for the stone benches. Pair it with the free gardens and you have a whole Sunday for the price of parking.
Balboa Park · Rotating Tuesdays · county residents
A different set of Balboa Park museums is free to county residents each Tuesday. Bring ID. It turns an expensive museum date into a free one, and Tuesdays are the quietest day in the park.
Barrio Logan / North Park · Second Saturdays · free entry
Barrio Logan's galleries open on second Saturdays with free entry, live music, and street food you can skip or not. The most underrated free date night in the city, and it's walkable.
Countywide · Free · author talks and film nights
The Central Library downtown and the bigger branches run free author talks, film screenings, and concerts. Low-key, indoors, and a genuine conversation starter afterward.

OB, Mission Bay, Coronado · First-come · free · claim by 4pm
Concrete fire rings at Ocean Beach, Mission Bay, and Coronado are free and first-come. Claim one by late afternoon on a weekend. Bring firewood (no pallets or trash), a blanket, and something to eat. The best long free date in San Diego.
Downtown · Free · 1–2 hours
Start at Waterfront Park, walk south past the Midway and the Kissing Statue to Seaport Village. Free the whole way, well lit after dark, and you can bail into dinner at any point without moving the car.
Little Italy / Hillcrest · Sat and Sun mornings · free to browse
Little Italy on Saturday, Hillcrest on Sunday. Both free to walk, both full of samples, and both end near coffee. The lowest-pressure first-hour of a date in the city.
