What to do out east
The lakes
Lake Jennings, Lake Murray, Lake Poway, and Santee Lakes cover fishing, walking loops, and camping. Several are drinking-water reservoirs where swimming is prohibited but boating is not.
Mt. Helix
A short drive up to a hilltop cross and amphitheater with a panorama from the ocean to the mountains, especially good at sunset. Free, and a five-minute walk from the parking loop.
Middle Eastern food in El Cajon
Along Main Street and East Main you'll find bakeries turning out fresh samoon bread, charcoal grills, shawarma, and Iraqi pastries. It's one of the most distinctive food scenes in Southern California and almost entirely undiscovered by tourists.
La Mesa Village and Santee
La Mesa Village gives you a walkable few blocks of restaurants, bars, and a weekly farmers market. Santee adds breweries, Trolley access, and the lakes.

Expect summer highs 10-20 degrees above the coast, with regular triple digits in Lakeside and Ramona. Winters are cooler and clearer than the coast, and the marine layer usually doesn't reach this far inland.
Housing
Meaningfully cheaper per square foot than coastal neighborhoods, with more single-family homes and yards. That gap is the main reason families move east.
Commute
The I-8 and 52 into the city run 20-40 minutes off-peak and considerably worse during rush hour. The Green Line Trolley serves La Mesa and Santee, which is the underrated advantage.
Wildfire risk
The 2003 Cedar and 2007 Witch fires both burned through East County. Insurance costs, brush clearance rules, and evacuation planning are part of life in Alpine, Ramona, and the backcountry.
Getting further out
East County is the launching pad for Julian, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, Mt. Laguna, and the Anza-Borrego desert — all within 60 to 90 minutes.
