March brings Padres Opening Day at Petco Park, the Ocean Beach Kite Festival and the tail end of gray whale migration; April is peak wildflower and jacaranda season with the most reliable weather of the first half of the year; May brings Cinco de Mayo in Old Town, Fleet Week events, Gator by the Bay and the start of 'May Gray' mornings that burn off by early afternoon. Expect highs in the high 60s, ocean water 60–63°F (wetsuit territory), and hotel rates well under July levels except during spring break weeks and Memorial Day weekend. Book Anza-Borrego wildflower trips the same week you see a bloom report — the peak lasts days, not weeks.

Downtown effectively shuts down for the afternoon. Even without a ticket, the Gaslamp and East Village bars run all-day watch parties, and the Park at the Park behind center field is the cheap way in.
Local tip: Take the trolley. Garage pricing around Petco on Opening Day is the worst of the year.

A neighborhood institution: kite-making in the morning, a parade down Newport Avenue, and hundreds of kites over the beach in the afternoon. Very small-kid friendly.

The northbound migration runs through March and often into April, with mothers and calves hugging the coast. Cabrillo National Monument's overlook is the free option.
The most reliable weather of the first half of the year, and the best month for flowers.
Borrego Springs · 2 hours east · Free · park day-use only
In a wet year the desert floor turns to color for a couple of weeks somewhere between late February and early April. Watch the park's bloom reports and go the week they call it, not the week after.
Local tip: Leave by 6 am. Midday desert heat and afternoon crowds both build fast.
Balboa Park, Bankers Hill, Kensington · Free
Purple jacaranda canopies take over whole streets from late April into June. Balboa Park's walkways and the residential streets of Bankers Hill are the classic photo spots.
Normal Heights · Free
Dozens of acoustic sets in bars, coffee shops and storefronts along Adams Avenue over a weekend. Free, walkable, and a good excuse to eat your way down the street.
Festival density peaks — and so does the morning marine layer.
Old Town · Free entry
Old Town's biggest day of the year: mariachi, folklórico, food stalls and packed patios. Go early in the day if you want to eat without a two-hour wait.

Coastal mornings turn overcast and stay that way until noon or later. Plan mornings inland — Balboa Park, the zoo, Julian — and hit the beach after 1 pm.
Yes — April in particular. You get warm afternoons, wildflowers, a full events calendar and hotel rates below summer. The trade-offs are cool ocean water (60–63°F) and overcast coastal mornings in May.
Local and out-of-state school breaks stack up from mid-March through the first week of April. Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and Mission Bay hotels fill first; book those weeks well ahead.
Anza-Borrego's desert bloom usually peaks somewhere between late February and early April and depends entirely on winter rain. Coastal wildflowers at Torrey Pines and Mission Trails run March into May.
A persistent marine layer that keeps the coast overcast through the morning in May and June. It usually clears by early afternoon, and it's often sunny a few miles inland the whole time.
