San Diego's hidden-bar scene splits into two types. There are genuine reservation-only rooms behind unmarked doors — you book online, get an address and a door instruction, and arrive on time or lose the table — and there are bars-behind-bars, where a normal restaurant hides a second room through a bookcase, a phone booth or a walk-in refrigerator. The Gaslamp and downtown hold the highest concentration, with more in North Park and Little Italy. Expect $16 to $20 cocktails, a two-hour table limit at the reservation rooms, and a soft dress code that means no beachwear. Prohibition history here is real — San Diego's border location made it a rum-running hub — so a few of the rooms sit in genuinely old buildings.

Gaslamp / Downtown
The strictest rooms take bookings weeks out, seat you at a set time and email a door instruction the day of. They're built for cocktails and conversation, not groups — most cap parties at four or six.
Local tip: Cancellations get released the morning of. Check the booking page around 10am for same-night tables.

Several Gaslamp restaurants keep a back bar behind a false door. These usually take walk-ins before 8pm and turn into a wait after that.
Less spectacle, better drinks per dollar.
North Park
The neighborhood's cocktail bars are less about a hidden entrance and more about a small back room with a separate menu. Prices run a few dollars below downtown and the crowd is local.
Little Italy
A couple of upstairs and behind-the-kitchen rooms with amari-heavy lists. Good landing spot after dinner on India Street.
San Diego and Tijuana ran a serious rum-running trade during Prohibition, and a few downtown and Coronado buildings still trade on tunnels and back rooms from the era — some real, some marketing.
