For a first-timer, pick a beginner or intermediate room rather than the venue's hardest one; for a group that's done several, look for rooms with physical set-building and multi-room reveals rather than padlock-heavy puzzles.

The scene clusters in a few areas. Pick by drive time, then by theme — the venues within each cluster are close enough to pair with dinner.
Downtown
The densest concentration, and the easiest to pair with dinner and drinks in the Gaslamp afterward. Parking is the main annoyance — use a garage rather than circling.
Local tip: Book a late-afternoon slot, then walk to dinner. Evening slots and dinner reservations fight each other.
Central
Central to almost everywhere in the city, with free parking and mall food courts nearby. Good default for a group coming from multiple directions.
Central-north
Pair the room with Convoy Street afterward — hot pot, Korean BBQ and late-night dessert are all within a few blocks. One of the best combined evenings in the city.
North County
Several venues serve the North County suburbs, which saves the drive south if you're coming from Encinitas, Vista or Oceanside.
South Bay
Fewer options but far less driving if you're south of downtown.
The single biggest failure mode is one person quietly holding a clue that unlocks someone else's puzzle. Narrate what you find, even if it seems meaningless.
Pile everything used on a table and everything unused somewhere else. Half of all lost time is re-searching a drawer someone already emptied.
Local tip: Once a lock is opened, physically move it away from the puzzle area. It stops the group re-trying it.
Hints are free and unlimited at most venues. Pride costs you the room. If you're stuck more than five minutes on one puzzle, ask.
