Transportation savings come from choosing the right mode for each leg rather than renting a car by default. The airport, downtown, Little Italy, and much of the Gaslamp are easy to connect by transit, walking, or a short rideshare. A car becomes more valuable for Torrey Pines, North County, Anza-Borrego, and days with several spread-out stops, but hotel parking can erase the apparent convenience.
Price a complete trip: rental rate, taxes, fuel, tolls, hotel parking, attraction parking, and rides between neighborhoods. For the Trolley and bus, load a fare product before boarding and allow extra time for transfers. Airport rideshare pickup rules and surge pricing change, so leave a buffer for the return trip.
