Touring Broadway lands at the Civic Theatre downtown — and the next generation of Broadway shows often premieres in La Jolla first. Here's how to see both without overpaying.

Broadway touring shows in San Diego play the San Diego Civic Theatre at 1100 Third Ave downtown, presented by Broadway San Diego. Season subscriptions go on sale in spring and single tickets usually release two to four months before each run, priced roughly $60–$175. The best value seats are the front of the first balcony (Loge) rather than the rear orchestra. Separately, La Jolla Playhouse regularly premieres Broadway-bound musicals before they head to New York, and the Balboa Theatre and California Center for the Arts in Escondido host smaller touring productions. For cheap seats, watch for digital lotteries, day-of rush and under-30 programs.

Spring
Broadway San Diego announces its next season in the spring. Subscribers pick their seats first and pay less per show than single-ticket buyers, plus they get priority for add-on blockbusters that sell out fast.
Local tip: If you plan to see three or more shows a year, the subscription almost always wins on price and seat quality.
2–4 months out
Single tickets typically go on sale a couple of months before each engagement through the official Broadway San Diego and Ticketmaster channels. Buy from the official links — the Civic Theatre is a frequent target for resale markups.
$25–$45
Many tours run a digital lottery in each city (often opening 48 hours before a performance) plus limited day-of rush. Check the specific show's official site the week you want to go.
It's a large house, so seat choice matters more than at a small theater.
Best overall
Close enough for faces, far enough to take in full choreography. Rows A–E are too close for big dance numbers.
Best value
The front two rows of the Loge often cost less than mid-orchestra and give a clean, elevated sightline of the whole stage picture. This is the insider pick.
Cheapest
Steep and distant, but the sound is fine and prices can be a third of orchestra. Bring binoculars for dialogue-heavy plays.
Mixed
Far-side seats can lose part of the stage on shows with deep sets. Read the seat map notes before booking a discounted side seat.
UC San Diego
The Playhouse has originated Jersey Boys, Come From Away, Memphis, The Who's Tommy and Diana. Tickets to a pre-Broadway run cost a fraction of what the same show charges in New York two years later.
Balboa Park
The Globe develops new musicals and plays too, several of which have transferred to Broadway. Its holiday Grinch musical is the biggest family ticket in San Diego each December.
