Driving south into Tijuana takes minutes — there is usually no stop at all beyond a random secondary inspection. The northbound return is where the time goes: general lanes at San Ysidro routinely run one to three hours on weekend afternoons, while Otay Mesa is often faster for anyone heading to east or south county. You need a valid passport or passport card for every person in the car (a driver's license is not enough to re-enter), Mexican liability insurance for the vehicle, and a tourist permit (FMM) only if you're going past the free zone or staying more than seven days. Cross early morning southbound, come back before 11am or after 8pm, and check live CBP border wait times before you leave the restaurant.

Three things decide whether the trip is smooth.
Every US citizen in the car needs a passport book, passport card, or another WHTI-compliant document to come back north. Children have their own rules — check before you go rather than at the booth.

US policies do not satisfy Mexican liability law. Buy a short-term Mexican policy online before you leave or at one of the last-exit offices on the US side.

The scenic toll road to Rosarito and Ensenada takes pesos and usually cards, but small pesos make everything simpler — parking, tips, street food. Withdraw at a bank ATM rather than a border kiosk.
The northbound queue is the whole game.
US Customs and Border Protection publishes live wait times per lane at each crossing. Look before you head for the line — a 40-minute drive to Otay Mesa can save two hours.
The single worst window at San Ysidro. Weekend day-trippers all funnel back at once. Come back before lunch or wait out dinner in Tijuana and cross late.
Local tip: Weekday mid-mornings are the quietest crossings of the week.
If everyone in the car has an RFID-enabled document (passport card, enhanced license, trusted traveler card), you can use the Ready Lane, which usually moves faster than general traffic.
Paid lots at San Ysidro run roughly $10-20 a day. Walk across the PedWest bridge, then use Ubers in Tijuana. No Mexican insurance, no parking hunt, no border queue in a hot car.
Local tip: The trolley Blue Line runs to the border from downtown, so you can skip driving altogether.
