    Parking and crowds

The Golfcrest lot is free but small, and it's full by 7am on weekends and most weekday evenings. Overflow parks along Navajo Road, where signage restrictions apply. The Big Rock Park trailhead in Santee is the reliable alternative — a slightly longer route with far easier parking.

Sunrise, sunset and the summer heat problem

There is zero shade on any route. From June through September, hike before 8am or after 6pm — rangers respond to heat-related rescues here regularly. Sunrise from the summit is the best-attended in the city; bring a headlamp for the descent if you go pre-dawn.

What you see from the top

    Local tips

    • Bring more water than you think — a liter minimum, two in warm months.
    • The rock steps are uneven; trail runners or hiking shoes beat flat-soled sneakers.
    • Weekday mornings are far quieter than any weekend hour.
    • Continue to Pyles Peak if you want the same views without the crowd.
    • The Mission Trails visitor center a few minutes away has restrooms, water and maps.
