Thanksgiving in San Diego is a warm-weather holiday — highs are usually in the upper 60s to mid 70s, so patio dinners, beach walks and hikes are all realistic. Book a restaurant dinner four to six weeks ahead: hotel buffets on the Embarcadero and in Coronado, prix fixe menus at bayfront and La Jolla restaurants, and the Hotel del Coronado's Crown Room are the reservations that vanish first. If you want to cook but not cook everything, most local markets and specialty shops take heat-and-serve catering orders with a hard cutoff around the Friday or Saturday before the holiday. Turkey trot morning runs are held across the county, with the largest in Oceanside and downtown. On the day itself, Balboa Park's grounds, the beaches and most trails are open and free; major museums, the zoo and Legoland set holiday hours that vary each year, and nearly all non-restaurant retail is closed until Black Friday. Traffic is light Thursday morning and heavy Wednesday afternoon and Sunday — that's when the airport and I-5 clog.

Coronado · Buffet and prix fixe
The classic San Diego holiday dinner, in the Crown Room and other hotel venues. Expensive, formal-ish, and the single hardest reservation in the county on this day.
Local tip: Book the earliest seating — later seatings run behind and the buffet gets picked over.
Downtown · Buffet
The downtown waterfront hotels all run large Thanksgiving buffets with bay views and easy valet. Good for groups where nobody agrees on a menu.
La Jolla · Prix fixe
The Prospect Street and Coast Boulevard rooms serve three- or four-course holiday menus with a sunset ocean view. Request an outdoor or window table when you reserve, not on arrival.
Downtown · À la carte plus specials
A good fallback if you want a real meal without turkey. Many stay open with their normal menu plus a holiday special, and they take reservations later than the buffets.
East County · Buffet
The tribal casinos east of the city run big, comparatively affordable holiday buffets and are one of the few places still taking walk-ins on Thursday afternoon.
Local markets, delis and several restaurant groups sell complete dinners you pick up Wednesday and reheat. Order cutoffs land the weekend before — Saturday is a safe deadline, the Monday before is a gamble.
Butcher shops and farmers markets take turkey orders through early November. Walking in on Tuesday means frozen and whatever size is left.
Most large chains open Thanksgiving morning and close early afternoon; smaller specialty markets close entirely. Buy anything you might forget on Wednesday morning, not Wednesday evening.
Several county markets run their normal schedule the weekend before and are the best source for pies, sides and produce without the supermarket crush.
Morning 5K and 10K runs happen across the county — the largest in Oceanside and downtown, with smaller neighborhood races elsewhere. Family-friendly, costumes encouraged, and they finish in time for dinner prep.
Thanksgiving is one of the emptiest good-weather days of the year on the sand. Coronado, La Jolla Shores and Mission Bay all work, and parking is unusually easy before noon.
The gardens, El Prado and the Botanical Building grounds are open and free; individual museums set their own holiday hours, so check before driving over.
Cowles Mountain, Torrey Pines and Iron Mountain are all busy but pleasant on a cool November morning. Go at sunrise if you want a parking spot at Torrey Pines.
Outlet centers in Carlsbad and San Ysidro open early Friday, holiday light displays and the December events calendar start the same weekend, and Sunday is the worst travel day of the year at the airport and on I-5.
