Ocean-view decks in La Jolla, Del Mar, and Ocean Beach are best at sunset and cold after it; bring a layer even in July. Fire-pit patios in Little Italy, Liberty Station, and Encinitas work year-round after dark. Courtyard and alley patios in North Park, South Park, and Hillcrest are shaded, quieter, and the most reliably pleasant midday. Rooftops in downtown and the Gaslamp are best from 4pm to 8pm and windy on the water side. May and June bring the marine layer, so a sunset patio in June Gloom is often a grey patio — August through October is genuinely the best patio stretch of the year.

The best ocean views in the county and the highest prices to match. Book a sunset table two weeks out in summer, ask for the rail if the restaurant tiers its deck, and take a jacket — the temperature drops sharply once the sun is down.

The single most common San Diego dining mistake is booking a view patio on a night the marine layer eats the view.
May and June routinely deliver overcast coasts and sunny inland neighborhoods on the same afternoon. If the coast is grey, move the reservation to North Park or Hillcrest and you will have a better night.
Book 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. Arriving at sunset means you are eating in the dark and paying the view premium for nothing.
