San Diego's live music happens in small rooms most nights of the week. North Park and Golden Hill carry indie, punk and Americana; downtown and the Gaslamp run cover bands, DJs and dance floors; Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach do reggae, surf rock and cheap covers; and Little Italy and Bankers Hill hold the jazz rooms. Covers at bar-sized venues run free to about $15, with $20 to $35 for touring acts at the mid-size clubs. The best free-music nights are weeknights: a lot of bars run no-cover Tuesday and Wednesday sets to fill the room.

North Park
The heart of the local scene. Small stages, local bands most nights, low or no cover midweek, and the bars are walkable between so you can bail on a set without ending the night.
Local tip: 30th Street is the spine — start there and follow the noise.
Ocean Beach
Newport Avenue bars run reggae, surf and jam bands with cheap or no cover, plus regular open mics. The most relaxed live-music neighborhood in the city.
Gaslamp
Bigger rooms, cover bands and DJs, dance floors and a cover charge on weekends. Best when you want a crowd rather than a specific band.
Little Italy / Bankers Hill
A handful of small jazz and soul rooms with a house band and a rotating cast of local players. Sunday and Monday nights are often the good sessions.

Tuesday and Wednesday no-cover sets are how bars fill quiet nights, and the bands are frequently better than the weekend cover acts.
Most small venues post the week's schedule on social media rather than a website. The local alt-weekly listings and venue Instagram accounts are the reliable sources.
North Park and downtown are easy rideshare zones. Last call is 1:30am countywide, and the trolley's late service is limited — plan the ride before the last set.
