Getting there: The Gaslamp Quarter trolley station sits at the north end of Fifth Avenue. Parking garages off Sixth and Market are cheaper than the valet stands on Fifth.

Honestly, many locals walk north to Little Italy or east to East Village instead — the Gaslamp skews toward visitor traffic. Within the Gaslamp itself, Rustic Root, Havana 1920, and Café 21 for breakfast are the picks that hold up.
It's the priciest concentrated dining district downtown, but happy hour between roughly 4 and 6pm cuts prices sharply across most of Fifth Avenue. Little Italy and East Village generally offer better value for the same money.
