Stay in Chula Vista if the park is the main event and you want the shortest morning drive with a toddler. Move to downtown San Diego (20–25 minutes) only if you're combining the park with the Zoo, Balboa Park or the waterfront and want restaurants within walking distance in the evening. Rooms with a separate sleeping area or a suite layout matter more than location here: everyone is back at the hotel by 4pm and nap and bedtime logistics decide the day. Chula Vista's Eastlake area is the best base: five to ten minutes from the park, free parking at most hotels, suite layouts for young kids and the lowest family rates in the county. Choose downtown San Diego only if you're pairing the park with the Zoo, Balboa Park or the waterfront.
About 20 to 25 minutes by car heading south on the 805 or the 5, longer in weekday afternoon traffic.
It's difficult. The park is in eastern Chula Vista away from trolley stops, so rideshare from downtown runs roughly $30–$45 each way. If you're carless, staying in Chula Vista shortens the trip and the cost.
