The story of American Comedy Co.
American Comedy Co. opened on 6th Avenue in the early 2010s and quickly became the room that put San Diego back on the national club circuit. Before it, touring headliners largely skipped the city or played one-off theaters; the club gave agents a proper 200-seat room with a full week of shows, and the booking caliber jumped almost immediately. It has since hosted the kind of mid-tour comics who film specials a year or two later, which is why regulars treat the Tuesday and Wednesday shows as scouting nights.

The classic Gaslamp comedy date: dinner on 5th or 6th around 6pm (book ahead on weekends), a 7:30 or 8pm show, then a short walk to a rooftop bar while the late show crowd lines up. If you're doing the late show instead, flip it — drinks first, eat after. Rideshare pickup is calmer one block east on 7th than directly in front of the club.
