For accessibility, the county's all-abilities playgrounds — Sunshine Berardini Field's Miracle League area and the inclusive play areas at several community parks — have poured-rubber surfacing, ramped structures and adaptive swings. Nearly all city playgrounds are free, open dawn to dusk, and have little natural shade, so mornings before 11 am beat afternoons for most of the year.

Small structure with grass and a walking path right on the water. Best for toddlers and for burning twenty minutes with a bay view.

Several newer community parks include inclusive equipment: adaptive swings, ground-level play panels, ramps instead of steps and fenced perimeters. Pacific Highlands Ranch, Encinitas Community Park and a number of county parks have them.

Fully fenced play areas are rare here. Tidelands Park and several newer North County parks have enclosed toddler zones — worth the drive if your kid bolts.
Tidelands Park in Coronado for the complete package — big structures, restrooms, picnic tables, a beach and skyline views. Pepper Grove in Balboa Park is the best central option.
Pepper Grove in Balboa Park has mature trees, and most newer North County parks use shade sails over the structures. Older neighborhood playgrounds usually have none.
Newer community parks like Pacific Highlands Ranch and Encinitas Community Park have poured-rubber surfacing, ramped structures and adaptive swings. Older parks with wood-chip surfacing generally aren't accessible.
A few — Tidelands Park and several newer North County community parks have enclosed toddler areas. Most San Diego playgrounds are open to the surrounding park.
