San Diego's burger scene splits three ways. For smash burgers with lacy crisp edges, the counter shops in North Park and Barrio Logan lead — expect $12–16 for a double. For the classic pub burger, Rocky's Crown Pub in Pacific Beach is the local institution: cash-only, one size, no fries, and widely considered the best burger in the city. For beach-shack burgers, Hodad's in Ocean Beach is the famous one (long lines, huge portions, a bacon burger built for sharing), with a downtown location that's easier to get into. Late night, the 24-hour drive-through options and North Park pubs cover you after bar close. Almost every good burger here is under $18.

A dive bar that serves one thing: a thick, simply dressed pub burger on a soft bun, no fries, no substitutions. Cash only and 21-and-over, which keeps the line short. The purist pick for best burger in San Diego.
Local tip: Bring cash and go before 6pm — there's no table service and seating is limited.
Ocean Beach and downtown · $$ · Long lines, huge portions
A surf-shack burger joint covered in license plates, famous for a bacon cheeseburger that arrives the size of a softball. The OB original has the atmosphere and the wait; downtown has neither.
