Croissants, pan dulce and Convoy District milk bread — three traditions, one city.
Last updated
San Diego's bakery scene runs in three parallel tracks. For European-style pastry and naturally leavened bread, Wayfarer Bread & Pastry in La Jolla and Prager Brothers (North County, also the wholesaler behind many restaurant bread baskets) are the standouts, with Le Parfait Paris covering downtown French classics. For pan dulce — conchas, orejas, empanadas — the panaderías in Barrio Logan, City Heights and Chula Vista sell better pastry for under $2 than anywhere else in the county. For soft milk bread, taro buns and cream cakes, the Convoy District's Asian bakeries in Kearny Mesa are the destination. Nearly all of them sell out of the best items before noon on weekends, so early is the whole strategy.
| Bakery | Known for | Area / price |

Go early; the good stuff is gone by mid-morning.

Gaslamp and Del Mar · $$ · Open early
French bakery and café with macarons, croissants and éclairs — the most convenient good pastry downtown, and reliable for a gift box.
The best value in San Diego baking. Grab a tray and tongs, pick what you want, pay at the counter.
Barrio Logan · $ · Under $2 a piece
Conchas, orejas, empanadas and bolillos baked through the day. Pair with a visit to Chicano Park's murals and the mariscos counters nearby.
Central and South Bay · $ · Early hours
Larger neighborhood panaderías with wide selections, tres leches by the slice and custom cakes for a fraction of boutique prices.
Soft, less sweet, and made for eating the same day.
Kearny Mesa · $ · Tray-and-tongs service
Milk bread, taro and red bean buns, egg tarts, pork floss rolls and light fresh-cream cakes. Same self-serve tray format as a panadería, different pastry tradition.
Local tip: Fresh-cream birthday cakes here are usually cheaper and less sweet than a supermarket cake — order a day ahead.
Wayfarer Bread & Pastry in La Jolla for croissants and naturally leavened bread, Prager Brothers in North County for loaves, and the Barrio Logan panaderías for the best value pastry in the county.
Panaderías in Barrio Logan, City Heights and Chula Vista, where conchas, orejas and empanadas typically cost under $2 each and are baked in batches through the day.
The Convoy District in Kearny Mesa, along Convoy Street, has the county's concentration of Asian bakeries selling milk bread, taro buns, egg tarts and light fresh-cream cakes.
Before 10am on weekends for the small pastry shops — croissants and morning buns are usually gone by 11. Panaderías and Convoy bakeries bake all day, so timing matters less.
