Little Italy cafes
Five minutes east of the terminals, Little Italy's India Street corridor has some of the city's best espresso and most open by 6 or 6:30am. The right stop if you're being dropped off or have a later flight.

The good coffee within a few minutes of SAN — before security, near the rental car center, and what to expect inside.
Last updated
San Diego International Airport sits unusually close to good neighborhoods, which means genuinely good coffee is five to ten minutes from the terminals — rare for a major airport. Inside the terminals, coffee options have improved and include local roasters, but airport pricing and security-line uncertainty make a pre-security stop appealing if you have time. The best plays by direction: Little Italy (five minutes east) has several excellent cafes and opens early; Liberty Station in Point Loma (five minutes west) has good coffee in a calm setting that's ideal if you're dropping a rental car or killing time before a flight; and the airport cell phone lot area has nothing — don't count on coffee while waiting to pick someone up. If you're being dropped off, the move is a Little Italy stop before heading to the terminal. If you have an hour-plus buffer and want one last good San Diego coffee, Liberty Station is the relaxed choice with easy parking.
| Area | Drive time to terminals | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Little Italy | ~5 min east | Best cafes, early hours |
| Liberty Station | ~5 min west | Relaxed, easy parking, rental-car returns |
| Inside security | 0 min | Local roasters at airport prices |
| Cell phone lot | 3 min | No coffee — plan ahead |

The former Naval Training Center in Point Loma has good coffee in a sprawling, low-stress setting with free parking — ideal before returning a rental car or when you need to kill an hour.
The corridor between the airport and Old Town has a handful of drive-through and counter coffee spots that cater to airport workers — fast and early, not destination quality.
If you're coming from a Point Loma hotel, Shelter Island's cafes offer bay views with your coffee, ten minutes from the terminals.
SAN has upgraded its concessions and both terminals now include San Diego-based coffee brands — meaningfully better than standard airport coffee, at standard airport prices.
Terminal 2 has the wider selection, especially in the newer west concourse. Terminal 1's options are more limited; if you're flying out of T1 with time to spare, get coffee before security.
For departures before 6:30am, most post-security cafes are just opening when you board. Terminal coffee before 6am is essentially grab-and-go chains — set expectations accordingly.
SAN's security lines are usually efficient but can spike 5:30-8am. Build the Little Italy stop in before you arrive, not after — once you're at the curb, your options are whatever's past the checkpoint.

No. The cell phone waiting lot has no services. Get coffee in Little Italy or Liberty Station before you head to the lot to wait for an arrival.
Little Italy cafes generally open between 6 and 6:30am. Inside the terminals, full coffee service starts around 5:30-6am — for earlier flights, options are limited to grab-and-go chains.
No — liquids can't pass the checkpoint. Finish your coffee before security or bring an empty reusable cup and have a post-security cafe fill it.
