Downtown covers several distinct pockets: the Gaslamp Quarter (nightlife, tourists, Fifth Avenue), East Village (Petco Park, newer restaurants, breweries), and Little Italy's edge along the waterfront. Walkable end to end in about 20 minutes.
- Getting there
- Every trolley line converges here, the Amtrak/Coaster station is at Santa Fe Depot, and the airport is a five-minute drive.
- Parking
- Garages run roughly $15–30 on event nights and much less otherwise. Padres home games change the math on everything within a half-mile of the ballpark.
- When to go
- Check the Padres schedule first. A non-game weeknight downtown is a completely different — and much easier — experience.
- Local note
- Gaslamp gets the tourist volume; East Village a few blocks east usually gets you the same quality with a shorter wait.
